Mission Statement: To ensure the safety of the residents of Lorain County by providing community-based supervision and rehabilitation through a multi-disciplinary approach to persons being convicted or adjudicated of a crime.
In 1990, the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas created the Adult Probation Department. Staff of the Adult Probation Department is located at 374 Broad Street, Elyria, Ohio. Offenders are sent to our department from Court where they are placed on community control. The Presentence Investigation Unit is located at 216 Third Street, Elyria, Ohio. This unit conducts Presentence, Post Sentence, Intervention In Lieu of Conviction and Expungement Investigations for the Court of Common Pleas.
The Lorain County Adult Probation Department is a part of the General Division of the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas. The department works under the direction of the Common Pleas Judges and the Court Administrator’s office. Supervision services are also provided as needed to the Municipal Courts of Lorain County. The Adult Probation Department is responsible for providing Intensive Supervised Probation services to offenders in the community. The goal of the Adult Probation Department is to facilitate rehabilitative efforts for offenders, resulting in a safer environment for the residents of Lorain County. Supervising offenders includes conducting home visits, scheduled office visits, random urinalysis and making the appropriate referrals to community and/or treatment agencies.
The Lorain County Adult Probation Department receives grant monies from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. This funding from the ODRC supports the Adult Probation Department’s specialized units of probation officers. These officers supervise offenders within the County rather than taxpayers pay the cost to house offenders in prisons. In addition, cognitive behavior treatment is available for all offenders while on probation. This programming has been successful in reducing recidivism rates and giving Judges of the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas alternatives to prison.
The Lorain County Adult Probation Department is dedicated to promoting safety within the community and victim reparation by providing strict Court order monitoring and cognitive behavioral programming for offenders.
